When a refrigerator isn’t cold anymore, it is time to figure out what the issue is. A lot of times it is something as common as a good coil cleaning. But, with new fridges, they’re manufactured with a variety of sensors as well.

Before we investigate further, we inspect the most typical and common reasons for this issue. Here are some things that we have determined lead to a refrigerator that will not cool:

Is the cord plugged into an outlet? This will seem like it’s a silly question, but we have been hired for appointments that this was the issue. For some reason, it was not plugged in. it’s possible a child or pet unplugged it, or an electrician during a project. Whatever the reason may be, make sure it is plugged in.

Check the thermostat inside. This is a very common issue for families with children in the home. After all, children like dials and buttons and so, without understanding they are doing anything wrong, they play with them. So, check that the thermostat setting isn’t the cause of the warm fridge.

Which Refrigerator Parts to Inspect?

Be sure each of the vents in the freezer area aren’t blocked with food or boxes. This is very common since sometimes bags of frozen vegetables get pushed in the back of the freezer. There might be food in the back of a freezer that has long been forgotten about.

Be sure the condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To check this, unplug the fridge and slide it out from the wall. The fan for a lot of models is right at the bottom of the appliance or somewhere in the back of the freezer section. A lot of times, customers do not think to clean this area of the appliance. But, it is very important to clean it. And, it piles up with fuzz and dust quickly, especially in homes that have pets. So, grab a clean rag and get the dust out of the coils and cooling fan.

This is not recommended for refrigerators that have the rear coil system. Once everything is clean, plug it into the wall and notice if the fan moves.

The Freezer is Cold but the Refrigerator Isn’t

There are a few more reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these more common ones to take a look at if the freezer is cold but your refrigerator isn’t. The evaporator coils have frost on them. This occurs when there is a malfunction in the defrost system. Or if the automatic defrost experiences an issue. The evaporator fan motor is another reason.

Every refrigerator has a set of evaporator coils. These evaporator coils are what gets cold and the fan circulates the cool air throughout the appliance. The damper control assembly isn’t working the right way. The temperature control board transports the electricity to the compressor and fan, this is not likely the problem but it’s worth troubleshooting.

And, the thermistor could be defective, which is a small sensor within the unit that displays the temperature. Having one of our repairmen look at it is the best solution but these are some of the most typical issues.
